Core Concepts
Tournament
A competitive event where teams compete through weight-matched fights across multiple rounds or phases. A tournament file (.derby) contains all players, teams, cards, schedules, and results.
Player
The owner of one or more teams. Players register teams and their entries never fight each other (conflict of interest prevention). Also called "owner", "gallero", or "representante" in some regions.
Team
A group of cards (typically 4) competing together. Teams accumulate points based on their cards' fight outcomes. Teams belong to a player (owner).
Card
An individual competitor within a team. Each card has a weight in grams and fights once per round. Cards are matched based on weight similarity.
Phase
A stage of the tournament with its own schedule. Teams advance between phases based on their scores. Each phase can have different settings (tolerance, rounds, etc.).
Round
A group of fights where each team fights exactly once. The number of rounds equals the number of cards per team (typically 4).
Fight
A single matchup between two cards from different teams. The result is recorded as Green Win, Red Win, or Tie.
Matching & Scheduling
Schedule
The generated list of all fights for a phase, organized by round. Derby generates multiple schedule options ranked by quality.
Tolerance
The maximum allowed weight difference (in grams) between two cards in a fight. Lower tolerance = closer weights but potentially fewer matches.
Delta
The actual weight difference between two matched cards. Derby minimizes delta across all fights. Shown in grams (e.g., "Δ 15g").
Common Denominator
An auto-calculated tolerance that maximizes the number of teams that can participate. Derby finds the smallest tolerance where all teams can be matched.
Round Mode
Matching mode that organizes fights into rounds where each team fights exactly once per round. The primary matching mode for multi-round tournaments.
Simple Mode
Matching mode that creates a flat list of fights without round divisions. Optimizes purely for weight difference. Ideal for events without eliminations.
Tagged Mode
Matching mode where cards are grouped by tags and matched within their groups. Used for independent sessions or inter-group finals.
Unique Matchups
Setting that prevents the same two cards from fighting again in later rounds or phases. Ensures variety in matchups.
Advanced Features
Pact
A forced pairing that guarantees two specific cards will fight each other, bypassing the normal matching algorithm. Used for pre-arranged or grudge matches.
Wildcard
A reserve entry that can be promoted to the main bracket when needed. Used to balance odd team counts or replace withdrawals.
Company Card
An organization-provided entry used to fill odd-count rounds or balance brackets. Unlike wildcards, company cards don't count toward standings.
Omit (Exclusion)
A rule that prevents a specific team or card from being matched. Used to exclude teams that need to sit out or have conflicts.
Bracket (Weight Class)
A weight range that groups cards for matching. Cards are only matched within their bracket (e.g., 2000-2200g, 2200-2400g).
Arena
A physical area where fights occur. Multiple arenas allow parallel fights with automatic load balancing and cadence optimization.
Satellite Station
A remote device (computer or mobile) that captures fight results and syncs with the central Derby server in real time.
Outcomes & Scoring
Outcome
The result of a fight: Green Win, Red Win, or Tie. Outcomes determine points awarded to each team.
Green Win
The card in the green corner (first listed) wins the fight. The green team receives win points.
Red Win
The card in the red corner (second listed) wins the fight. The red team receives win points.
Tie
Neither card wins the fight. Both teams receive tie points (typically less than win points).
Rankings
The ordered list of teams by cumulative score. Used to determine which teams advance to the next phase.
Pass Points
The minimum score required to advance to the next phase. Teams below this threshold are eliminated.
Hardware & Output
Weight Scale
A device that measures card weight. Derby supports USB/HID scales (Dymo, Mettler-Toledo) and serial scales (Torrey, Rhino).
Thermal Printer
An ESC/POS receipt printer used to print fight tickets, team receipts, and judge sheets instantly.
Match Presenter
A full-screen display mode that projects fights and rankings to the audience in real time via projector or large screen.
QR Live Tracking
QR codes on reports and the presenter that spectators scan to view live rankings on their phones.
Streaming Overlay
A browser-based overlay for OBS/vMix that displays real-time fight data during live streams.
