Matching Modes

Understanding how Derby pairs competitors

Derby offers three matching modes, each optimized for different tournament formats. All modes use weight-based optimization to minimize the difference between paired competitors.

Round Mode (Recommended)

License: Advanced

Organizes fights into rounds where each team competes exactly once per round. This is Derby's primary mode for structured tournaments.

How it works

  • Number of rounds equals cards per team (typically 4)
  • Each card fights once per round
  • Minimizes weight difference while maintaining round structure
  • Supports partial rounds (e.g., 3 of 4 cards fight)

Best for

  • Multi-round tournaments
  • Events requiring balanced participation
  • Tournaments with advancement phases

Simple Mode

License: Basic

Creates a flat list of fights without round divisions. Optimizes purely for weight difference and is ideal for events without eliminations.

How it works

  • All fights listed sequentially
  • No round grouping
  • Maximum optimization for weight matching

Best for

  • Quick eliminations
  • Single-round events
  • Informal tournaments

Tagged Mode

License: Advanced

Groups cards by tags and matches within groups. Also known as "Gallo Compromiso" or "Peso Obligatorio".

How it works

  • Cards are assigned tags (categories)
  • Matching occurs within each tag group
  • Inter-group finals can be configured

Best for

  • Weight class divisions
  • Independent session management
  • Special exhibition rounds
